But believe it or not, Adobe Photoshop has a lot of tools that you can use to manipulate images. It will take you several days to figure out how to use all of these tools. Each tool can be used on its own to create a simple effect on an image. If the tools are combined, it can create a more complex image or graphic art. If you only want a specific effect such as the abstract there are different tools you can use to achieve this effect. Photoshop abstract tutorials will be the perfect tool for you to be able to come up with that effect.

These tutorials can be found anywhere in the Internet. The tutorials for abstract effect will instruct you on how you will be able to come up with that effect using different tools. One kind of the abstract effect is the pseudo abstract look.

The tool that you are going to use is the perspective tool. Just make a rectangular selection on the image that you have chosen. Then press Ctrl + J to copy it on a new layer. Then go to Edit menu and look for Perspective. Then move the chosen nodes in any position you want and do the same for the other rectangular selection that you are going to use.

If you want to know more Photoshop abstract tutorials then you should download an eBook, audio book or video tutorials. You will be able to learn how to use photoshop faster when you are also applying the things that you are reading or watching.

Fredrick Ituma

Au<div

Before you apply any of these special effects, it can be useful to apply a masking on your photo to select which areas you want to change and which you want to keep unchanged. You can easily get a nice soft fade between the effect and no-effect areas. This is called masking and there’s many ways of doing it. The one method I almost always use now (it took years before I discovered it) is the ‘quick mask mode’. It is very easy to use and usually gives acceptable results.

Quick masking

In Adobe Photoshop find the button called ‘edit in quick mask mode’. It’s located near the bottom of the main tool bar and looks like a circle in a rectangle. There’s also a short-cut key: Q. Once in quick mask mode, you can select and deselect areas simply by painting them with white and black respectively, using the standard brush tool. Zoom to 100 or 200 % for best accuracy. You might want to use a soft-edged brush to avoid hard edges. Alternatively, when you’re done, exit the masking mode and go to ‘Select > Feather’ and set the feather radius to 5-10 pixels or so. A nice option is that you can set the opacity to anywhere between 0 and 100%, allowing you to apply the effect stronger or weaker in one part of the image that another.

Layer masking

Slightly more complicated, you can add a layer mask. This allows you to apply any effect gradually from any point in your photo. Follow these steps in Photoshop:

1. Select ’Windows > Layers’.

2. Right click on your

layer and select ’Duplicate layer’.

3. Click on the little icon in the bottom of the layer box called ‘Add layer mask’.

4. Select the ‘Gradient tool’ on the main tool box.

5. Choose a gradient style from the top ‘Options’ bar (linear, radial etc.).

6. Now click on your image on the point you don’t want to change, then drag the mouse away to the point where you want the full effect to take place. The effect will be applied gradually more and more along this line you’ve now create.

7. Finally, go back onto your original background layer and apply any effect you want. This will apply the effect in a soft, gradual way. Use opacity to turn the effect down to less than full strength if you want.

Lens-like effects

Using the layer masking described above, you can apply ‘Gaussian blur’ which will make the selected areas appear soft-focused, a bit like if you had used a large-aperture lens. With ‘Curves’ you can make your corners darker than the center, replicating the lens effect called vignetting. Technically, vignetting is considered a lens dysfunction, but subjectively it can add an extra feeling to your photo, a kind of frame that will have a ‘sucking’ effect, bringing more attention into the centre of your photo. You can also just lower the contrast and/or colour-saturation around your main subject, helping to separate it from the background clutter. There’s many other options, be creative!

Soft glow effect

Great for creating a ‘romantic’ look for portraits. Here’s what you have to do:

1. Duplicate layer.

2. Apply ‘Gaussian blur’ to the new (top) layer. Make it blurry, but leave a little detail.

3. Play around with the blend modes and opacity till you get what you want:

‘Darken’ or ‘Multiply’ blends darkens image details while also softening features and adding a halo. Good for soft, expressive shadows.

‘Lighten’ or ‘Screen’ blends lightens the image instead. Nice for adding high key or highlight glows.

‘Soft Light’ and ‘Overlay’ adds contrast and saturation. Especially useful for landscapes and still life photos.

Black-and-white-ish

A cool metallic black-and-white’ish look, in my opinion very suitable for documentary work and subdued portraits, is easily obtained by setting the contrast high (curves) and colour saturation low. Do it with Photoshop’s ‘layers’ to be able to tweak your exact settings it in place.

Colour grading

You know how some movies have a ’special look’, golden brown, sick yellow-greenish, cool blue etc.? You can get the same effect in your photos if you want. The simple way is to go to ‘Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation’, click ‘Colourize’ and use the slide bars to select your preferred grading. If you are going for a well-defined colour, it’s better to use the ‘Edit > Fill’ function. Simply select the colour you want and set the ‘Blending mode’ to ‘Colour’. Either way, it’s good first to duplicate your layer before you start. This will allow you to preserve some of the original colours by turning the colour grading down. Use the ‘Opacity’ slider in the layer box to do this. If you want a duotone image, simply make 2 duplicate layers and give them different colour gradings. Mix them together, again with the ‘Opacity’ slider and the different ‘Layer blending mode’ options in the layer box.

One example: To give your image a warm golden-brown colour tone, first make two duplicate layers. Use ‘Edit > Fill’ to make the first one brown (#963A12) and the second one yellow (#EDC715). Set opacities to 30 and 60% respectively and select the ‘Multiply’ blending mode for the top (yellow) layer. Tweak it in place to get it exactly like you want. Also try adding a soft glow, as described above.

Micro contrast

This is a really neat trick to enhance your contrast and draw out texture details in your photos. You can even use it when your overall contrast is already maxed out, using all tonal ranges from pure black to pure white. The procedure is similar to the normal ‘Unsharpen Mask’, but with some special settings. Go to ‘Filter > Sharpen > Unsharpen Mask’ and set the ‘Amount’ to around 20-30%, the ‘Radius’ to 50-100 pixels and zero on the ‘Threshold’. You will get a subtle contrast enhancement that, for some pictures at least, works really well.

Using any of the above mentioned effects can improve your photos and make them really eye-catching. However, learning when to use them and when not to use them is just as important as learning how to use them. When to use special effects in your photos is a matter of personal taste and judgement. Use it, but don’t overdo it. Often, less is more.

Morten Svenningsen

Author Bio
The author, Morten Svenningsen, is an award-winning Danish <a

It’s interesting how sometimes older technologies or art forms take on an even greater value when they are made obsolete by the new and modern. This is certainly true of black and white photography. When color photography came on the scene, it seemed the days of black and white in both video and photography were over forever.

But that was certainly not the case. Over the years we have seen black and white take on a new artistic value in both genres. In fact, it is not at all unusual any more to see a very modern movie filmed entirely in black and white. It is also common to visit a fine art museum and find a photographic art display that uses black and white extensively. Black and white has some artistic and emotional qualities that are just not possible to achieve in color photography.

Probably the strongest quality that grabs the viewer with a black and white photo is its emotional power. Even if the photo is just of an old barn or an antique car, there is an emotional appeal that is difficult to analyze in words but universal to all of us as we look at a black and white shot. That is why black and white photos almost instantly take on an artistic look. So if you are evolving your artistic photography style and portfolio, including some experimentation with black and white will do a lot to improve your work.

Black and white also focuses the eye on the emotional center of the piece. Probably the best subject for black and white photography is the human face. In even a tranquil expression, the viewer can see<div

Living in an age of cosmetic enhancement and fake beauty, we women often feel pressured to make the most of our assets to boost our aesthetic appeal. A nip here and a tuck there, a bit of hair dye and the occasional sunbed, and we have the potential of feeling like Pammy in the pulling stakes. It’s not surprising that women aim for such a high benchmark given that the over Photoshopped pages in FHM and the other lads mags. These publications portray flawlessly rendered babes with perfect teeth, tums and bums, and not a split end in sight.

Cosmetic enhancement has gained in popularity in recent years with little tweaks and small procedures becoming run of the mill procedures. It is common for banks to give loans for boob jobs and lunchtime Botox sessions to be popped on a credit card. Shopping for makeup has been notched up a step or two; women are now shopping for a new way to wake up. It isn’t just the ladies either; men are becoming major targets of cosmetics campaigns. The metro-sexual man wants a buff body and white teeth, just like the men that adorn the magazine covers in WH Smith.

Without going too near the surgeon’s knife, there are simple yet effective ways of improving your appearance. Most can be done in a lunch hour, all are temporary and you are more or less guaranteed never to come away looking like Pete Burns, the one-man walking warning against permanent cosmetic ‘enhancement’. Exercise caution however, as bodily modifications are well known for being addictive. It may start off with a Saint Tro<div

In my opinion, one of the first ports of call is to get a gleaming smile. The procedures involved can involve as little as using a tooth whitening kit and a good mouthwash through to low invasive tooth implant surgery.

Tooth whitening can be done by a dental surgeon or at home using a specialized kit with a whitening gel, an applicator and gum shield. The procedure uses a form of bleaching agent called peroxide and comes in a variety of strengths. The stronger the solution the shorter the time it takes to bring your pearly whites to perfection. Be warned however that if you have exceptionally porous or sensitive teeth, the weaker solution is recommended. The bleaching treatment takes around 15 to 35 minutes and should be repeated daily if it is a home treatment for a few days until the desired results are achieved. After this, the kit only needs to be used as an ‘as and when’ top up treatment.

If you opt to get the treatment done at a dental surgery, the process is a little different. The orthodontist uses a high strength solution that is painted on in a very thin layer. This allows for a precise application and a short application time. Surgeries use a protective light-cured solution to minimize the risk of chemical burn to the gums as the surgical strengths are far greater than the ones in a home kit. Once you’ve successfully bleached the smile back on to your face, you’ll need to try your best to keep it that way.

The major causes of stained teeth are tobacco, coffee, tea, red wine and some foods. If you don’t fancy giving up the dental demons, adopting a sensible tooth care routine will keep your pearlies pearlescent. Regular brushing combined with flossing and mouthwash will prevent bacteria causing a buildup of plaque and keep those pegs-a-gleaming. Who needs to be a perfect 10 when you’ve got a smile that dazzles so bright they won’t be able to see if your bum looks big in that dress or not!

Dominic Donaldson is an expert in dentistry and the orthodontist industry.<br

Photographs can be enhanced in many ways with Photoshop. Many times the areas of the photo that are touched up can be differentiated from their surrounding areas. You have the tools to create a nice, soft fade from the effect and effect-free areas through masking and there are many ways to achieve this. Before you add an effect to any area of the photo it is useful to add this masking to the selected areas you want to adjust. One method most commonly used is the ‘quick mask mode’. It is quick and easy to use and normally produces acceptable results.

Quick masking: In Adobe Photoshop find the button called ‘edit in quick mask mode’.

Layer masking: Slightly more complicated, you can add a layer mask. This allows you to apply any effect gradually from any point in your photo. Follow these steps in Photoshop:

1. Select &#82

16;Windows > Layers’.

2. Right click on your layer and choose ‘Duplicate layer’.

3. Click on the little icon in the bottom of the layer box called ‘Add layer mask’.

4. Select the ‘Gradient tool’ on the main tool box.

5. Choose a gradient style from the top ‘Options’ bar (linear, radial etc.).

5. Select a gradient style from the top ‘Options’ bar (linear, radial etc.).

6. Click on your image on the point you don’t want to change, dragging the mouse away to the point where you want the full effect to take place. The effect will be applied gradually more and more along this line you’ve now created.

Lens-like effects: Using the same layer masking explained above, you can apply ‘Gaussian blur’ which will make the selected areas appear soft-focused, a bit like if you had used a large-aperture lens. With ‘Curves’ you can make your corners darker than the center, replicating the lens effect called vignetting. In principle, vignetting is considered a lens dysfunction, but subjectively it can add an extra feeling to your photo. It will create a kind of frame that will have a ‘sucking’ effect, drawing more focus to the center of your photo. You can also just lower the contrast and/or color-saturation around your main subject, helping to divide it from the background clutter. Be creative with the many options you have available!

Soft glow effect: Great for creating a ‘romantic’ look for portraits. Here’s what you have to do:

1. Duplicate layer.

1. Duplicate layer.

2. Apply ‘Gaussian blur’ to the new (top) layer. Make it blurry, but leave some detail.

‘Darken’ or ‘Multiply’ blends darkens image details while softening features and adding a halo. Good for soft, expressive shadows.

‘Darken’ or ‘Multiply’ blends: darkens image details while also softening features and adding a halo. Good for soft, expressive shadows.

‘Lighten’ or ‘Screen’ blends: lightens the image. Nice for adding high key or highlight glows.

Black-and-white-ish: Creates a metallic black-and-white’ish look, great for for documentary work and subdued portraits, and is achieved by setting the contrast high (curves) and color saturation low.

Color grading: You can get the same effect in your photos as in some ‘color washed’ movies. The easy way is to go to ‘Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation’, click ‘Colorize’ and use the slide bars to choose your favorite grading. If your goal is well-defined color, it’s better to use the ‘Edit > Fill’ function. Simply select the color you want and set the ‘Blending mode’ to ‘Color’. Whichever way, it’s advised first to duplicate your layer before you start. This will allow you to safeguard some of the original colors by turning the color grading down. Use the ‘Opacity’ slider in the layer box to do this. If you want a duotone image, just make 2 duplicate layers and give them different color gradings. Mix them together, again with the ‘Opacity’ slider and the different ‘Layer blending mode’ options in the layer box.

Color grading: The same color washed effects found in some movies (golden brown, soft blue) can also be applied to your photos if desired. The easiest way is to go to ‘Image > Adjustments > Hue/Saturation’, click ‘Colorize’ and use the slide bars to choose your preferred grading. It’s better to use the ‘Edit > Fill’ function if you want a well-defined color. Simply select the color you want and set the ‘Blending mode’ to ‘Color’. Whichever method, it’s good first to duplicate your layer before you start. This will permit you to maintain some of the original colors by turning the color grading down. Use the ‘Opacity’ slider in the layer box to do this. If you want a duotone image, simply make 2 duplicate layers and give them different color gradings. Mix them together, again with the ‘Opacity’ slider and the different ‘Layer blending mode’ options in the layer box.

Micro contrast: This is a fun technique to improve your contrast and draw out texture details in your photos. You can even use it when your overall contrast is already maxed out, using all tonal ranges from pure black to pure white. The process is comparable to the normal ‘Unsharpen Mask’, but with some special settings. Go to ‘Filter > Sharpen > Unsharpen Mask’ and set the ‘Amount’ to around 20-30%, the ‘Radius’ to 50-100 pixels and zero on the ‘Threshold’. You will get a understated contrast enhancement that, for some pictures at least, works well.

Using any of the above mentioned effects can improve your photos and make them really eye-catching. However, learning when to use them and when not to use them is just as important as learning how to use them. When to use special effects in your photos is a matter of personal taste and judgement. Use it, but don’t overdo it. Often, less is more.

DavidPeters

Author Bio
Did you like this article? Interested in <a
