Antispyware software is an important tool for every computer user, especially if you spend any time on the internet. It’s a little realized fact that there are more spyware infections than virus infections out there. Far too frequently, people mistake spyware infections for virus infections. In fact, it may be useful to discuss the differences in the types of malware out there.

Viruses are perhaps the most famous of the internet parasites. Nearly everyone knows about them, and almost all computers are sold with antivirus software already installed. They can be transmitted by way of a drive-by download or user downloads from websites and emails.

Drive-by downloads don’t happen very much anymore, as they can be prevented with firewalls. Email downloads are also prevented by and large by email servers having partnerships with antivirus companies. Website downloads are still an avenue of concern for users. Most of the time, viruses will disguise themselves as useful or interesting programs to convince users that they may want them.

Viruses attack in a distinctive way. The most visible symptom, apart from the running disguises such as Antivirus2009, is that the computer starts to run slow and programs start to fail. The computer itself may crash under the pressure of running this software. These symptoms are universal among malware. What separates viruses from other bugs is that they will damage files on your computer. You may lose something as minor as your calculator, or some essential part of Windows may be destroyed.

Worms are

some truly nasty bugs. They are often mistaken for viruses, but their methods of transmission and attack are distinct. The most frequent way that worms are spread is through messaging software, such as Instant Messengers and MS Outlook. Some online communities such as MySpace and AOL have been exploited as well. When one computer is infected, the worm will exploit their friends list and send them a message with a link. Once the receiving user clicks on the link, their computer is infected and it spreads through their friends list. Whole business networks have crashed this way.

Worm attacks will actually do physical damage to a computer. What they do is replicate themselves over and over again on a computer’s memory until the RAM card is filled up with useless information. Unless certain security measures are made beforehand, this often results in having to physically replace the memory cards on every computer infected.

Adware is a large classification of software, with which I will include spyware. The primary forms are Trojan Droppers, Downloaders, Backdoors and Browser Hijackers. They can all be transmitted in the same way as viruses, which lends to part of the confusion. They come in varying degrees of maliciousness, with the Droppers and Hijackers being the least malicious and the Downloaders and Backdoors being the worst. Droppers will only try to send you pop-ups and Hijackers will only redirect your browser. The Downloaders will do just that. They will bring more Adware to your computer and have, on occasion, downloaded viruses and worms. Backdoors are just flat out evil. They can do the same thing as the Downloaders, but they can also allow a hacker to actually get into your computer and take control of it.

Spyware is simply adware with the added ability to scan your temporary files to find browsing history and tracking cookies. They then upload this information to a remote server or hacker where your information, which may include credit card or banking information, gets processed and filed away. Then they send you customized advertisements in pop-ups, pop-unders, banners and browser redirections.

Rogue or corrupt security tools are an integration of various bits of spyware and adware technology used to make a user think they have a massive malware infection in order to steal their money. They make the pretense of selling you a security tool to this end.

Viruses and worms are the domain of antiviruses. For the rest, you need an antispyware program. It’s in your best interest to find one with a 100% removal guarantee.

Carl Atkinson

Author Bio
Carl runs a site devoted to helping you rid your computer from all sorts of <a

It has got all the features a home user needs. Has simple interface, is easy to use and customize, works with little or no configuration.

Spyware Protection

You should also keep good anti-spyware software on your computer. Spybot – Search and Destroy is one of many good examples of these, and it’s free. Be wary of anti-spyware programs that advertise via pop-ups; these “anti-spyware” programs sometimes contain some of the same problems they supposedly protect you from!

Spybot S&D is one of the best free Anti-Spyware software, I have been using it for last couple of years. Spybot is great at keeping spyware out of the systems. The program has an easy to use interface, very user friendly system. The program takes out cookies, spyware, ads, and many other things you do not want it.

Apart from Spyware removal Spybot has other Advanced tools like:

- Secure Shredder ? Securely remove files you no longer want from your hard disk.

- BHOs ? Show and manage the Browser Helper Objects from your Internet Explorer

- IE tweaks ? Modify some hidden Internet Explorer settings.

- Hosts File ? Take a look at your hosts list.

- System Internals ? Search for registry inconsistencies

- System Startup ? Show and manage the applications that your machine will run on System Startup.

- Uninstall info ? Show all registered software uninstall entries

Sensible Personal Precautions

Most viruses come from your email. This cannot be overemphasized. Never open an email attachment that you weren’t expecting; always check with the person who emailed it to you, through a phone call or just via email or chat, to make certain it is a real attachment that’s safe to open.

Other viruses come from illegal and legal downloads. If you’re downloading illegal software or data, you can expect to find viruses in a pretty high percentage of it. What’s tragic is that a lot of illegal viruses creep into legal download sites. This is why you need to maintain your virus protection program in an up-to-date manner, even when you’re careful about downloads.

A few viruses are attached to web pages. Though their servers generally shut them down as soon as they’re found, or your server blocks the sites to protect you, you’ll find a few viruses that download to your computer simply by visiting a site. You can protect yourself by maintaining the Internet Explorer security settings at a medium level or higher, or by using alternate browsers like Firefox with good security.

Spyware often comes from “free” programs. You’ve seen those cool screen-savers for free? Spyware. Try to download free programs from places that vet their software carefully.

With these three software’s (available for download at syschat.com) installed and some personal precautions your computer should be spyware and virus free.

Sajid

Author Bio
Sajid is staff writer for SysChat a free online computer tech support community http://www.syschat.com

No related posts.

Spyware – Is somebody watching you?

Malware Removal On Servers

Computers

Free anti spyware

Free Spyware Removal

Malware spyware

Spyware blocker

Spyware Protection

Spyware remover
<guid

Generally, an infected system does not attempt to transmit the infection to other computers; the issue is contained to your local system.

They will reach your system by exploiting security holes or are packaged with user-installed software, such as Limewire. Spyware is often hidden alongside other programs, and you may unknowingly install spyware when you download a program from the Internet or install software from disks.

Spyware normally interferes with networking software, which commonly causes difficulty connecting to the Internet. Spyware, along with other threats, has led some Windows users to move to other platforms such as Linux or Apple Macintosh, which are less attractive targets for malware. However these platforms are not full-proof so don’t fall into an out of sight trap.

The scariest part of being attacked is the privacy implications, as spyware can also gather information about e-mail addresses and even passwords and credit card numbers.

Not only can spyware programs collect various types of personal information, but they can also interfere with user control of the computer in other ways, such as installing additional software, redirecting Web browser activity, or diverting advertising revenue to a third pa<div

Anti-virus software can detect many but not all forms of malicious software before they have a chance to affect your computer.

Anti-spyware applications must also be able to remove programs on reboot for spyware/adware that refuses to be removed through normal processes. Of course, anti-spyware applications alone can’t protect you entirely from unwanted spyware and adware. For example, recent test results show that bundled software (WhenUSave) is ignored by popular anti spyware program AdAware, (but removed as spyware by most scanners) because it is part of the popular (but recently decommissioned) Edonkey client. To address this dilemma, the Anti-Spyware Coalition has been working on building consensus within the anti-spyware industry as to what is and isn’t acceptable software behavior.

Another form of spyware is Adware, it’s similar to viruses in that they can be malicious in nature, however the focus now is money as people are now profiting from these threats making them more and more popular.

Adware is often hidden alongside other programs, and you may unknowingly install it when you download a program from the Internet or install software from disks. Malware will log your keystrokes, steal your passwords, observe your browsing choices, spawn pop-up windows, send you targeted email, redirect your web browser to phishing pages, report your personal information to distant servers, and serve up pornography. Malware hijacks your browser and redirects you to advertising or a phishing-con web page.

It’s important that you lockdown your computer today and protect yourself from the threats on the Internet today.
