Photo-Paint’s native format is ”.CPT” (Corel PHOTO-PAINT Image), which stores image data as well as information within an image, including objects (layers in some raster editors), colour profiles, text, transparency, effect filters.

The program can open and convert vector formats from CorelDRAW and Adobe Illustrator and can open other formats, including PNG, JPG and GIF files — as well as competing photo editor formats from Photoshop, GIMP and Paint Shop Pro. The program also supports plug-in functionality including those developed for Adobe Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro. Other extensions such as brushes are also compatible with Photo-Paint.

As a component of the CorelDRAW Graphics Suite, Photo-Paint can exchange data with other programs in the suite, including Corel CONNECT (Version X5), which enables users to share files between different computer software and drives on the user’s computer. CorelDRAW and Photo-paint are also Copy-paste compatible, with format and effects retention — and without file conversion.

John Allison started hand drawing and scanning the original ”Bobbins” webcomic in 21 September 1998 up until mid 2000 when he changed to computer drawing with Adobe Illustrator. Stephen Gerding described ”Bobbins” as “kind of like “Friends”, or “Coupling” with an office atmosphere, and John noted his later episodes got very bizarre and this, beginning in 2002, led to the supernatural tone of ”Scary Go Round”.

In a blog post dated 9 July 2009 Allison announced ”Scary Go Round” would be ending in September 2009. It was replaced by a new strip with elements in common with ”SGR”, similar to its transition from ”Bobbins”.

Computer art started in 1960s and by its nature is evolutionary since changes in technology and software directly effect what is possible. The term ”pixel art” was first published by Adele Goldberg and Robert Flegal of Xerox Palo Alto Research Center in 1982. Adobe Systems, founded in 1982, developed the Postscript language and digital fonts, making drawing painting and image manipulation software popular. Adobe Illustrator, a vector drawing program based on the Bezier curve, was introduced in 1987 and Adobe Photoshop followed in 1990. Adobe Flash, a popular set of multimedia software used to add animation and interactivity to web pages, was introduced in 1996.

In the 2000s, pixel artists have been employed increasingly in video games and, to a lesser extent in music videos. These artists have remained somewhat underground until the mid-2000s. In 2006 Royksopp released “Remind Me”, illustrated completely by pixel art, which the New York Times cited as amazing and hypnotic. DrawPlus X4 and Starter Edition both support the SVG file format in order to allow cross-application document exchange. Both versions also support PNG, JPEG, GIF, Microsoft HD Photo and TIFF export. DrawPlus X4 also opens and exports PDF documents, CAD drawings, and is also able to open EPS documents and Adobe Illustrator files (version 9.0 onwards). DrawPlus X4 can be used to create Adobe Flash swf files and WMV/AVI movies from user animations. DrawPlus can also be used to create GIF animations.

Output from both DrawPlus X4 and Starter Edition can be automatically supersampled to create very high quality exported images.

SVG Kit for Adobe Creative Suite is a plug-in, which adds full-functional support of SVG images to Adobe InDesign and Adobe Photoshop. Because of the fact, that Adobe’s SVG support is limited (the most up-to-date version of Adobe Creative Suite at a current point in time is CS5), it is possible to work with SVG directly only in Adobe Illustrator. To avoid quality losses and edit vector graphics in InDesign or Photoshop, the only alternative is to convert SVG image to EPS vector format first. SVG Kit gives opportunity to work with SVG like with any other supported type, which makes it efficient for design and desktop publishing purposes, when usage of numerous vector image files is assumed.

”Earthweek – A Diary of the Planet” is a syndicated newspaper column created by Steve Newman. It is published weekly on various days by subscribing newspapers, and reports on events in Earth’s natural history. The feature was the first fully paginated newspaper column to be distributed with placed graphics, thanks to the growing popularity of the Macintosh platform in newspaper graphics departments during the late 1980s.

Due to the slow modem speeds common in 1988, early versions of Earthweek were limited to low-resolution graphics. Subscribing newspapers maintained a library of individual icons and the base map, which were used by the “wire frame” of the Pagemaker document distributed to them each week. Earthweek is now created in QuarkXPress with Adobe Illustrator graphics, and is delivered as a complete, integrated package.
